CONFIRMED: Let the New Bruce Banner fancasting BEGIN!!!

Surprising almost no one who's been following this, Marvel Studios now confirms the HitFix story from yesterday about Edward Norton not reprising his role as the human half of The Hulk in "Avengers":

The confirmation comes from an exclusive message forwared to HF by President of Production Kevin Feige, which prominently includes the following: "Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members."

Translation: Norton is too much of a pain in the ass to work with on this big of a movie - at least from Marvel's perspective. The fact is, Norton is notorious for forcibly inserting himself into the production side of moviemaking; a tendency that's been jointly labeled as "passionate" or "obnoxious" depending what end you were on and what the result was. He and Marvel had a VERY public dust-up over the final cut of "The Incredible Hulk," and they were almost-certainly dreading having to deal with that again... nevermind the unknown factor of how it'd "mesh" with having an already extra-dominant personality at the helm in Joss Whedon.

The MOST interesting thing in Feige's letter is an outright refutation of the original reports that the role would go to an unknown. Says Feige: "We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

"Name actor," as in "name you know."

Hey, y'know what would be the BEST time to announce who it is, especially if it's a "good" name - i.e. one that they think will make fans "get over" losing Norton really fast? Comic-Con... a few weeks from now. The timing of this is probably not an accident, and means they're probably already well on their way to a decision.

So what's the "name" gonna be? HitFix's McWeeny tossed out Sharlto Copley, which makes an almost ridiculous amount of sense. And since Whedon is directing every male actor from Angel, Buffy, Firely etc. can all go on The List as well. Anyone else?

Uber broody depressed Banner having to be convinced by Cap to join: Javier Bardem (No country for Old Men)

Running assertive Banner hunted by Iron Man and Ross: Chris Evans, going Eddy Murphy and now convinced to take every single super hero Marvel can't find someone else for.
Or Chris O'Donnell (Robin, McVet)

Hiding in plain sight Banner (european or weapon X-lab) Michael Shanks (Stargate SG1)
No, wait, he's not a name-actor for mainstreamcrowds... err.... well, Mark Wahlberg?

With the Whedon speculation, perhaps Nathan Fillion will have some (larger, more purple) tightpants to be captain of

I'm not saying this makes any sense though

So it's confirmed:

Lou Ferigno gonna be the new Hulk again, no CG Hulk, also Carnage in Spiderman Eclipse will be played by Shia Le Buttfuck.

To the guy who said Michael Shanks, I just gotta say. Holy shit does that work when I think about it.

if Nathon Fallon is involved, I want him in as a Captain Hammer cameo.

It should absolutely be Eric Bana.

I think they should bring back Eric Bana.

I caught parts of Hulk on Syfy yesterday and I still say it's the better Hulk movie, and the cast is a big reason why.

As talented as Edward Norton and William Hurt are, I think Eric Bana and Sam Elliot both did a much better job. And Jennifer Conelly is 10x the actor that Liv Tyler will ever be.

Anyway, I can imagine a quiet, withdrawn, Bana being a great partner RDJ's manic Tony Stark, and Sam Jackson's badass Nick Fury.

Couldn't agree with you more.
It would be so great to see Eric Bana as the Hulk again, may be a little chronologically confusing though.
Other than that, i think it would be great.
And i totally agree that Jennifer Conelly is a far superior actress.
Man that would be so sweet to see Bana again.
The casting was the best part of the Ang Lee version of the Hulk, everyone was casted absolutely perfectly.

Sad about Norton's pink-slip. He was quite good, but if he's prone to production meddling, he can't fly in a movie where EVERYBODY will be paying attention to adherence to canon. Such is the way the biscuit breaks.
Hm. The Joss Whedon Stables... The guy that played Simon Tam? It's been 10 years since Firefly, he might be old enough to pull it off now.
I agree with the Eric Bana bit. Bring him back, he was good!
Actually, I think Peter Facinelli could be a good Bruce. He isn't as visually imposing as Bana, and for those of you who haven't seen The Big Kahuna... well, for starters, SHAME ON YOU, but more importantly, he plays a low-key, unassuming type quite well. Granted, Kahuna was also 10 years ago, he might be a little older now. AND, it could be his ticket out of the Carlisle Cullen typecast that we all KNOW is just so close to permanence.

So it's confirmed that you're a big douchebag, and talk shit.

David Tennant's also been thrown into the rumor mill. (Mind you, his name seems to be tossed out for everything from the new Riddler to Bilbo Baggins, so take it with a grain of salt.) much as I think he's the best ACTOR that's been brought up so far (or, more accurately, one of the best actors I've ever seen...seriously, watch his Hamlet), and as much as I adore the man to little pieces, I'm not quite sure I can see him playing the Hulk. It's just not clicking in my brain. Not working for me.
