Regrettable

Until further notice, anonymous commenting is no longer available on this blog. I don't like it, but there's been too much bad behavior as of recent and this is the only way to curb it while still allowing the majority of readers to still post. Google and/or OpenID registrations are free, and while I understand and sympathize with those who don't want to register in some way to post online there really is no other way.

Sincerely sorry it had to be this way, Bob. It's always a shame when bad behavior forces these kinds of changes, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Hopefully this'll help cheer you up a little:

What actually happens if you let the Anons run amok?
Someone reads some bad words?

Ok, I haven't commented in a while because Bob has been acting like the pretentious fat fuck that he is, but i've decided to throw him a bone this time and give him some advice for three reasons.

1. I feel REALLY sorry for him.
2. I am REALLY against censorship
3. He won't listen to my advice because he is too full of himself. Need proof? Watch Episode 50 of the Game Overthinker.

Bob, bring back anon comments. You and I both know that when you leave someone out of the discussion, it is ALOT worse than having a few bored kids spam your page.

Is it just a coincidence that the spamming started right after you threatened your fans to resort to approval based commenting? Something that would drastically lower the visits on your blog?

Incase you still have you have your head up your ass and can't put two and two together THE TROLL WANTED YOU TO DO THIS. This is like Batman giving in to the Jokers terrorist acts.

You listening bitch? No? Ok then, we will see how far threatening your fans and fighting censorship with censorship lasts.

@Ralphael
Name-calling and vulgarity totally validates your point.

Baconchest said...

Are you freaking kidding me Ralphael? Calling Bob a "pretentious fat fuck" and then arguing Anon should be allowed to comment? I also feel sorry for Bob, because he gets needlessly argumentative trolls who post the same things over and over and drown out any kind of legitimate discussion that can otherwise occur on his blog posts (as well as the uncalled for and unnecessarily abusive personal attacks). Seriously, the guy reviews movies and talks about nerd stuff for a living. I don't know if it's jealousy because you can't believe people listen/read/watch his content, or just blind hatred, but the responses are just completely out of proportion with any of Bob's perceived crimes. His views might not always be palatable, and they might sometimes be internally inconsistent...but that does not warrant the kind of comments that Ralphael and others have been giving.

I once got into my drink over at my friends' house and said a few vulgar things in front of their small child. They had to ask me to cool it while I was over there. I did.

This is Bob's house. He invites us in and I'm happy to visit but this is Bob's house. Respect your host.

Do what you need to Bob!!

@ Raphael - I am REALLY against censorship too... but this isn't censorship. This is Bob's site. If you want the world to read your brilliant posts, think of something worth saying and start your own blog.

Laserkid said...

It is certainly regrettable, but I can definitely understand why it came to this.

I'm sorry for anyone who misses out because of the bad actions of the few, thankfully registration on the places that allow you to comment with an account is free (and you may already have it in some of the places).

So, yeah, put me on the agrees with both sentiments - that it's regrettable, but totally understandable.

I've never really felt the need to comment on one of Bob's blogs, but I do read a lot of the comments, and I'm glad he's making this change. It's very distracting to slog through all the disrespectful and off-topic comments that get left here and at TGO, especially when the actual conversation taking place is a good one. I say, do whatever is needed to get rid of the children trying to ruin the community simply because they disagree with you Bob.

I think Bob's just butthurt that some people called him on his 'Avengers' knob-slobbing.

xaszatm said...

Alright, I'm a long time reader-no time poster, but I disagree with this choice. Not because of censorship rights or something idiotic like that. This is your blog and your choice after all. However, looking through your backlog, most of your most hateful, spiteful trolls have Blogspot accounts, while most anonymous posters are on your side. There are exceptions to this of course, but it seems to fall under that way.

Still, it is your blog and it is your choice. Here's hoping the trolls don't stop you from making such interesting videos and posts.

Block the Anons. Too often Anon posts just increase the noise instead of the signal. Quality posts from Anons are usually the exception not the rule. With too many inane Anon Posts people will stop reading the comments section. (Who actually reads comments on You Tube anymore?)

This is Bob's Blog and therefore his work and he can choose who gets to later modify that work. He has chosen to require that people have to add a signature to their work if they want to add to his. If you can't or won't take credit for what you write then how can you ask another person to put it on their blog under their name.

Smashmatt202 said...

I always found commenting anonymously the "cowards way", like you can just drop by, say something stupid, and not have to worry about anyone calling you specifically out on it.

Kind of makes me glad I finally decided to get a Google account.

The Karligarchy said...

Bob, you know you´re doing something right cause you have haters. Haters are an indication of some amount of success. The same people hatin´ also seem to be the same people that read/view and comment on all of your posts. Anyway do what you got to do, your comment sections have been a circus for a long time.

Ralphael said...

@lemonvampire I know right? Or maybe some people of just tired of bob calling Christians, conservatives, and "white" people stupid and mentally handicapped.

@baconchest Like I said, bob bashes any group of people he dislikes with name calling. I'm giving him a taste of his own medicine. Funny you bring up jealousy, because sometimes I do envy him for doing a job he loves. But then all that envy goes down the shitter when he bitches about his amazing job, then I start to feel sorry for him because he has so much and he thinks he has so little. But no, I am not jealous of him because people watch his stuff. Even I watch all of his content because its good brain food. Just hate it when he opens his mouth about politics.

@jbjcurly Thank you for actually responding to my comment with a counter argument and not my name calling. Kudos.

SirRosser said...

Well, I understand the decision, but I'm a little sad to see the anonymous posts go. Whichever side I fall on during any given one of these debates, I've always really enjoyed watching the trolling, flame wars and fallout after a particularly hateful anonymous post. Sure, a few of them were just pointless spam, but I was always willing to take the extra...what, five or ten seconds? Ah, well. I'm sure that all of the REALLY interesting dissenters will use this opportunity to register their name and number, right? Right?

Megabyte said...

Rapheal pretty much said all I can about the topic. It seems anytime we get an article about politics, it's pulling out classic tropes against the other side.... in short... that he seems to believe the reason people disagree with him is because they are stupid and/or racist.

And Im going to be blunt, that attitude has been pinned to the area he has told us all he is from... so... it's kinda a herd mentality that those of us who know get pretty tired and pissed off with pretty fast.

Just like most people from the region, Bob seems pretty clueless when it comes to politics due to it.

Aaron said...

How is this censorship? Anonymity on the internet is overrated. If you have something to say, you shouldn't also assume you can say them from the cover of anonymity.

KevinCV said...

Agreed with Aaron. It sucks that Bob had to go this far, but you know what? I don't care. It's Bob's blog, so he's entitled to say what he likes on it. I've said this before, but it bears repeating: I may not always agree with everything he says, but I certainly don't flip my shit if I do disagree.

I especially don't condemn him for his views if they're coming from a rather biased viewpoint, because -shocker!- EVERYONE IS BIASED IS SOME WAY OR ANOTHER! It's just a fact of life. Deal with it.

I'm particularly saying that those less inclined to listen to what he has to say about video games simply because he's an old-school Nintendo fan. Hell, I'm just as unashamed of being a Nintendo fan as Bob, and the most shit I ever got for it was still playing the Kirby games despite being in my mid-20s. That's about it.

But simply because Bob is someone on the internet who hit it big and has a voice that can be heard, he suddenly has to live up to this bullshit of a higher standard of critiquing anything without any bias.

If anything, I find Bob's biases refreshing. Especially compared to most gaming sites who will continually dole out 10s and "Game of the Year" awards to games that don't even remotely deserve that kind of merit.

The Karligarchy said...

Im not a fan of overt bias saturation most of the time but, Bob expressed one big "bias" I found refreshing in an American Bob piece. "States rights is stupid", as a student of government and history it was refreshing to hear someone say that outright. Also, how can you have opinions without bias?

@lemonvampire
"Name-calling and vulgarity totally validates your point. "
Bob consistently insults groups that he disagrees with, usually by implying that they're stupid or racist for disagreeing with him. Name-calling and vulgarity neither validate nor invalidate a point. Your point is invalid.

@The Karligarchy
"Bob, you know you´re doing something right cause you have haters. Haters are an indication of some amount of success."
By your logic, George Bush must have been massively successful.

I have no problem with anonymous posting. Occasionally, blogger or blogspot will fuck up during the login process and I'll lose an entire post due to some memcache error. Sometimes, it's more convenient to just post anonymously rather than copy your entire post to the clipboard and cross your fingers that blogger doesnt fuck up while you're logging in.

That being said, I think that a lot of the fearmongering over removing anon posts is more about the fear that Bob is creating an echo chamber where only people that agree are allowed to post, and create the illusion of unanimous support.

I am living proof that such an allegation is false, considering that I frequently and vocally disagree with many of Bob's viewpoints, and those of many community members here, and I have never once been silenced or had my posts reported or removed.

lemonvampire said...

@biomechanical923
Criticizing and name-calling are not the same thing. Show me examples of Bob actually name-calling and swearing at groups he disagrees with.
Saying someone's point is invalid does not actually invalidate their point. Your point is invalid.

biomechanical923 said...

@lemonvampire

Name-calling and vulgarity neither validate nor invalidate a point.

Show me examples of a point being invalidated by the fact that the writer used vulgarity while making his point.

Your second point failed to address my first point. Your point is off-point.

lemonvampire said...

@Biomechanical923

I never said vulgarity invalidates a point, you made that leap. I was saying just that it does nothing to lend credibility to what you say. Look back up at Ralphael. Did I actually say his point was invalid? No. I just sarcastically pointed out how his language only makes him look inarticulate and unintelligent.
That's my final point.

"I just sarcastically pointed out how his language only makes him look inarticulate and unintelligent. "
But that's wrong.

Also, bob, this is your space. You can eliminate comments or edit comments or do wathever the hell you want here and none of your readers have a right to complain, becayse its your fucking space.

It would be like a guest in your home complaining when you tell him he cant swear. If he does not listen you might have to tighten up the rules about who you let sleep in the guest room.

Do whatever you want, but know that the stricter you make the rules, the less people are going to want to spend time in your house. Well, I guess it all hinges on what kind of people you want staying over.
