"Sinister"

Hey, do you feel like sleeping tonight? No? Good. Here's the trailer for "Sinister."

So, it's basically a Slender Man movie with the proper nouns changed in the script?

I suppose I've heard of worse premises. And I am definitely relieved that the main character thinks to actually getting the police involved.

Challenge accepted.

Cool movie, but when I do go to bed, I'm gonna sleep like a baby. Horror movies don't keep me up at night.

eh I've been scareder, I gotta be honest though most of this thing feels stitched together from other flicks like some kind a horror movie frankenstein, like Amityville Horror with a dash of the Shinning all smothered in Woman in Black sauce and garnished with the Weeping Angles from Dr. Who Season 5, also their villain looks like Diamanda Hagen from TGWTGs

At first I thought this was another joke trailer, but it turned out not to be. Seems like a nice semi-Lovecraftian tale, but a bit to heavy on the jump scares for my taste.

If I move into a house, and there's a box of Super 8 home movies in the attic, I'm gonna start a bonfire and make smores.

I assume this movie is called "Sinister" because "Stupid" was already taken?

Why on Earth would any Pagan culture worship a god that did things like that? Isn't that more of a monster figure than a god? Oh, wait, they just mean "pagan = evil" again. *headdesk*

I hope this is a better horror movie than The Ring and The Grudge turned out to be compared with their Japanese original counterparts ;)

Trailer looks, as always, promising.

Once again I'm reminded how lucky I am that I don't dream.

And what the shit horror? You're supposed to be the awful genre I trash all the time. But this looks pretty good, and Cabin in the Woods was goddamn amazing, and Woman in Black was pretty damned good and we've John Dies At The End out later this year. You're not allowed to be this good. Start being crap again.

@Omorka: Presumably for the same reason Jews, Christians & Muslims worship a god that nukes cities and turns people into salt. Or that the Greeks worshiped a bunch of inbred psychos. Or that poor people vote for politicians that work against their interests.

Sigh, when has anything good EVER come from watching an old super 8 reel found in the attic of your suspiciously cheap new house?

Really would love it if someone made a movie where the thing that makes the hero strong is just the fact that he is aware he is in a "movieverse" so to speak, and as such would just see things like the super 8 and go "Nope" and burn it immediately. He would also never go anywhere in the woods/mountains where there is no phone signal, and would never agree to join any sort of expedition to either space or uncharted temples in jungles XD

Damn those Killer Videotapes! Damn them all!

No but seriously, trailer looks half-decent. It'll definitely be worth checking out.

On another note, I haven't seen A Cabin in the Woods, is it really that good?

Best "horror" movie I have seen, is probable The Last House on the Left. If you haven't seen that one, it is worth it, trust me.

Why is it in the movies, whenever a character finds a box of Super 8 movies in the attic, he sets up the projector right there and sits down to watch them in in the attic? Can't he bring that shit downstairs? Is he afraid the Blu-ray player is going to trashtalk the projector or something?

Cabin in the Woods isn't just a horror movie. It is all horror movies.

It's fun!

This was actually written by C. Robert Cargill who's worked at AICN as Massawyrm as well as Carlyle at the animated movie review site Spill. I've heard him talk a lot about this film so it's good to see it getting a theatrical release. Can't wait to see it.

This looks worse than that new "Jewish Demon" movie that's coming out

Hey Bob, when will you admit that Obama's as bad as Romney, and that you're "it's only the courts that matter" argument is just an excuse to justify your intellectual dishonesty?

Anonymous said...

James, I think you've long passed every legal threshold to be classified as illegally cyberstalking and harassing Bob. Any competent psychologist could prove through your transcripts that you are dangerously obsessive, irrational, and pose a genuine risk to Bob's life. Don't think you're anonymous because Google is more than happy to hand over your personal information to the authorities; the only thing "protecting" you is Bob's decision not to pursue further action than deleting your shit. With your escalation and the clear danger you present, that can't last forever.

With that in mind, do you really want to get served a restraining order with the potential for fines and fucking jail over some Z-list internet celebrity's opinion? Seriously, don't ignore this like you do every other post directed at you: answer it.

Wait, John Dies At The End got a release date?

James said...

Anonymous: How am I dangerous? I don't want to cause any physical harm to Bob, just torment him for his arrogance, hypocrisy, and intellectual dishonesty. I'm not a stalker, just a gadfly.

Anon1 said...

-Step 2 in arguing like an idiot by James. Make a completely outrageous claim despite the fact that said person hasn't even made a stance on said issue and it completely derails the whole discussion.
Hey James, when will you admit that you are secretly attracted Bob, but since you don't know how to deal with your new found sexuality you just lash out at those you love? Also why didn't you respond my comment about you liking the KKK and the Holocaust(Must because you like them right? I knew it)? Cause clearly I am the most important person the the internet and every question or ridiculous claim I make MUST be answered, otherwise you are a dick and a coward.
Also where do you work? So I can bother YOUR boss and coworkers with my nonsense.

I had a few jumps, but it looks like nothing out of the ordinary. The director has a godawful track record (including doing a re-write on Scream 4)

Anonymous said...

James, you just admitted that your actions are intended specifically to cause emotional distress and you have no intention of stopping. That's an open and shut harassment case right there.

And "not dangerous"? YOU SPEND ALL DAY EVERY DAY SPAMMING BOB'S CHANNELS WITH DELIBERATELY INFLAMMATORY, DISRUPTIVE POSTS. You really think anyone's going to believe you wouldn't attack him if you had the chance? If you were level-headed enough to know you won't hurt him, you wouldn't be spending so much time verbally attacking him in the first place.

Seriously, James, there is no outcome here where you don't lose. You have laid bare more than enough information for legal action and, oh, by the way, The Escapist is an actual company with actual lawyers and more than enough reason to keep their second most popular contractor safe (especially with the upcoming Escapist Expo). Just saying.

Omorka - when it comes to things like this, think of worship as a really elaborate way of saying "nice doggy"...

Regarding James, whoever he is...

Back about a decade ago, I wrote a bi-weekly column for Diabloii.net called Garwulf's Corner - to my knowledge, it was the first computer games issues column in English to appear on the internet. Nowadays that's no big deal, but when I started in October 2000 there was pretty much nobody else doing what I was doing.

And, over the course of writing that column, I ended up getting some hate mail from a fellow who will remain nameless. His email was mainly abusiveness. I added him to my killfile (and made the mistake of telling him that I had done it), and he took out another email address and wrote another hate letter, claiming that as I was a public figure, it was his right to hound me. So, I wrote back again telling him to leave me alone - these were the key paragraphs, as I recall:

I have taken a second look over your letters, and most of them are not expressing a dissenting opinion, but are instead conveying verbal abuse. In your own words, you are "hounding" me. This is harassment, and is not covered as a right or freedom under the Constitution of the United States or the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Indeed, it violates my own freedom of association as guaranteed under both documents.

I am not forcing my readers to read my column; they are not "captive" in any sense of the word. You, however, are shoving your emails down my throat,
and when I told you that I had added you to my killfile, you contacted me via another email address and what may very well be an assumed name to ensure that I would read what you said. This conduct is not acceptable under any circumstances, in any country that I know of.

(I archived the correspondence just in case it became a police matter, which, happily, it didn't.)

The email ended with me telling him never to contact me again, and I never heard from the guy after that. I guess he realized that he had crossed the line after I explicitly spelled it out for him.

Ultimately, though, it is Bob's blog, and it's Bob's call as to whether the line into harassment has been crossed. I know that with Livejournal you can ban somebody from commenting - I imagine it is something similar here.

In this case, James strikes me as a persistent troll, best ignored. If he does cross the line, I imagine Bob will just ban him or the like.

@Sylocat: I personally think that's awesome. I'm officially looking forward to this - I love horror based around the whole "If you know about this, it's already too late" thing (i.e. House Of Leaves) and the Slender Man Mythos always did a great job of that. I know that was always a focus of mine in my Slender Man stories.

Just a small thing to add: James contacting Steve Butts demanding Bob be fired might seem like some "cute in a pitiful way" kind of childish footstamping, but it's a deliberate attempt at something known as tortious interference and, oh, yes, it's illegal, too. He can't be sued for it because no damages occurred, but it doesn't exactly help his case of being "harmless".

The monster looks like the lead singer in a metal band. Not an eldritch horror.

Merrick_HLC said...

I'm reminded of an episode of "Masters Of Horror" but I can't recall which one.

Anyway it doesn't really look scary to me, mostly just jump scares.

Also, Jimmy boy, it's getting old and when you admit you're just harassing someone it's still harassment whether you intend them violence or not.

This is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen and it's really awesome. I didn't know what to expect from this it while watching the film.
I'm glad that Ethan Hawke was in a lead role, he's a good actor.
