Sentient Internet Meme Predicts Obamapocalypse

Has-been B-movie fixture and Total Gym spokesperson Chuck Norris (and the missus) have hit the web once more with a bizzare video message urging Evangelical Christians to turn out on election day and stop Barack Obama (whose name Mrs. Norris intones in the manner of a dismayed peasant maiden lamenting a long-problematic dragon in a fantasy novel) from being re-elected. If their efforts fail, we are informed, America faces "A Thousand Years of Darkness."

So, hey - good job, willing patrons of "The Expendables 2," in kicking a few more coins toward delightful folks such as these...

The nudge-nudge coding at play for the prime audience is surprisingly overt: Evangelicals are the target here because it's believed that widespread distrust of Mitt Romney's Mormon faith within fundamentalist Christianity could keep them home on election day - the "Thousand Years" bit is a reference to certain fundamentalist interpretations of "Revelations" ...in other words, they're wink-winking about Obama being The Antichrist.

Charming.

For some people calling themselves Christian, they sure as hell don't know the difference between a Christian and a Mormon.

...that's not how movie ticket revenue works, Bob. You don't get to be MovieBob again until you figure it out.

I mean, attack "The Expendables 2" all you like, but strawmanning its viewers as political supporters is kinda taking the low road here.

Why are you voting for the Dragon? He's weak on defense: his burning and chewing up the Evil dark Druid Huss'Amah was a complete fluke. Also, our noble lords will desert the realm if he keeps asking them to pay for the upkeep of their demesnes.

I agree with anonymous. Attempting to blame and place guilt on viewers of a cheesy B-movie is a pretty low thing to do. Hate the film all you like, that's the only reason you even mention it and the insanity of Chuck Norris and his wife just adds more wood to your fire. They're separate things Bob, and aiming political vitriol at an audience that is seeing the movie because it's a cavalcade of classic action stars is pretty low.

A lot of people -myself included- tend to think James a little nuts, often bringing political dialogue where it isn't needed. Well you're bringing an innocent audience and a crappy action film into political dialogue when it isn't needed and has no connection beyond "Hey Chuck Norris was in that. Must mean it's against Democrat's like Obama, and its audience members are all political supporters of that nut-job." You're pulling a James here Bob, making connections and accusations where there are none and against those undeserving of such treatment. You're also placing guilt on people for no reason solely because a movie you dislike conveniently has a guy who's political views you dislike.

Yeah, it's a low-blow - somehow, I think "Expendables 2" can take it.

And the point still stands in my estimation: Norris' inane cameo in the movie (for which I'm sure he was handsomely compensated) exists because they figured his presence would sell tickets; which is probably true. It may not be an exactly-linear cycle, but the guy got paid in both money and exposure because people went to the movie, and this is the sort of stuff he uses his exposure and money FOR.

I don't mean the movie Bob -no pun intended- I mean the low blow to the people that watched it. I could care less about the movie, it's just a movie.

Granted he uses his popularity and the money he makes from that film and others for that kind of extremist nonsense I just think that the guilt levied at the paying audience members was a little harsh is all and wasn't very necessary in getting your point across.

Again Bob, I ask you - when are you going to grow a pair and admit that Obama is as bad as Romney? Yes, Romney sucks, but Obama has proven himself to be a disaster as well. Do the drone strikes, indefinite detention, continuing war on drugs, and economic blunders mean nothing to you?

So I'm guessing Gran Torino can be blamed for Clint Eastwood talking to a chair as well?

Remember never to watch a Charlton Heston movie ever again.

Speaking as a Conservative on 90+ percent of issues (I'm pro same-sex marriage), I agree that Chuck Norris is WAY out there.

I also never bothered to see either of the Expendables movies.

I just don't think that implying the audience for these movies agrees with Norris is the right way to go.

After all, it was just a silly movie that some people seemed to enjoy. That doesn't mean they all agree with Norris's views.

Just like eating at a certain fast food chicken joint doesn't mean you hate gay people: it just means you like chicken sandwiches.

I could go on with a dozen or so more examples but I won't.

Simply put, consuming a piece of product doesn't mean that you agree with or endorse every viewpoint taken by the makers of said product.

I almost gave his video a "thumbs down", but i didn't want to grace his channel with ratings.

@ Myles

He disabled ratings like a typical internet coward. Hasn't disabled comments yet, but considering the couple dozen I skimmed are pretty hostile towards him, we know it's coming.

That fans of THIS particular franchise are so bloody thin-skinned is endlessly entertaining. Seriously.

In any case, I'm not looking to suggest that buying a movie ticket means you SUPPORT (or don't support) something - I'm just incredibly tired of this no-longer-ironic mock-worship of Chuck Norris (which the movie is most-definitely a part of); because A.) it hasn't been funny for years and B.) all it's doing is propping-up the public persona of a guy who's really kind of a dick.

Aiddon said...

And this is yet another reason to despise the HELL out of this man. And the Expendables producers for putting him in that movie.

Bob: You're one to call people thin-skinned when you're quick to crucify anyone who dislikes a franchise YOU idolize. You goddamn hypocrite.

And again, when are you going to wise up and admit that Obama's as bad as Romney?

@ Above

James, just use your Blogger account, you coward. You're not fooling anybody.

Not to mention the guy was the worst actor in a genre hardly known for meeting community theatre standards. Utterly devoid of charisma. As for his films: I've never seen nationalist propaganda expressed with such a limp-wristed lack of passion. When I end up rooting for the evil Vietnamese generals, drug lords, and terrorists, it means YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG, CHUCK!

So having seen either of the expendables movies, If seeing one means I'm supporting a whack job...does that mean bob is supporting a rapist when he watches films by roman polanski?

MovieBob's own 'About Me':

"He is a tireless enemy of censorship, considers his personal politics "Libertine" and enjoys acting as a full time irritant to overly serious people of ALL political stripes."

Translation: "He is a tireless enemy of censorship, except for on his own blog. Pretends not to be another butthurt Liberal blogger when he clearly is, and currently spends 80% of posts on a blog ABOUT MOVIES AND VIDEO GAMES jumping on the latest bandwagon trend against Conservatives."

Bob, I loved your work when I discovered it in 2009. I started tuning out when you became a shill for Marvel. Now that you've become a knob-slobber for of all things, the Democrat Party, I'm tuning out more often.

Word to the wise: anyone who says "Democrat Party" is wrong about everything always and has to ride the short bus whenever automotive travel is called for.

"Yeah, it's a low-blow - somehow, I think "Expendables 2" can take it."

And this, Bob, is why don't have respect for you. I don't care about if something can take it or not... you just admitted to a low blow you KNEW was low... what does that make you?

Donald (The Scape) said...

I think in his latest comment Bob got the point he was trying to get across. And I have to agree with him, the Chuck Norris worship has been old for years and people continue to play it. I mean hell it's been going on since I first started high-school that was what 7 years ago.

And really I think all that Chuck Norris worship, ironic or not and all it's done is boost his ego. Giving him the idea that his opinion -as out there it is- matters, why, because he's Chuck Norris?

I still see no reason to call out audience members of the film and say things akin to "good job guys it's your fault" but I can see where he's coming from.

Annonymouse said...

Sorry Bob, but if Chuck gets to quote religion to support his politics, I'm throwing my own in:

"Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you from there."

"So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against....those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me"

And last but not least....

"And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all of them who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves."

Apologies for the digression, but the unpicked cherries are so often the sweetest.
