YOU HAVE NOW BEEN WARNED

Alright, people. This has to stop. Now. It's not fun or funny anymore.

It has always been my policy on this blog that anyone can post anything they want, but I will not tolerate thread-jacking or harrassment of other commenters - any other commenters.

I understand that, like any open forum, this site has it's trolls. I accept that as a reality and delete them where I find them. I understand that there are some regulars who see themselves as "helping" me by harrassing and picking on certain trolls, and while I appreciate the spirit the fact is it does much more harm than good.

Also, while I'm annoyed by (and won't tolerate) trolls... the fact is that a lot of people who engage in this kind of behavior do so at least in part because they are suffering from serious personal and/or psychological issues of their own and I'm not interested in making their lives any worse than they already are by trying to "bully" them into going away - nor will I allow any posts by others trying to do so stand without prompt deletion.

All regular commenters can consider this your final warning: If this bullshit continues (on ALL sides) I am banning anonymous comments again and this time it won't be temporary. I don't want to do this, as it innevitably lowers traffic and cuts into my income, but I Will. Not. Tolerate. Bullying. Of ANY kind. On this blog.

Do we have an understanding?

Sounds good I'm behind this new zero tolerance policy 100%.

I realise I have probably participated in this harrassment. Out of respect for everyone here, I shall step away from the comments section indefinitely.

I sincerely apologise if I have hurt anyone.

Still a fan, though.

The best way to deal with trolls is simply to not react. I was once a regular commenter on this blog (under a few different pseudonyms over the years) but I left a while ago because everything descended into a shitstorm of hate being flung around by the trolls and by everyone else trying to "defend" Bob. Rise above knee-jerk reactions and realize that the troll's raison d'etre is creating disturbances and gaining a reaction.

Anonymous said...

Bullying only comes from people with power, Bob. You have all the power here, so the only person to have any capacity to bully is you.

Anonymous said...

@TheAlmightyNarf

What the fuck makes you think you're coming out of this with clean hands and that you can brush yourself off and blame the rest of the world? You got down and dirty with the rest of them. All are punishéd here, friend.

This is why I oppose the banning of Anonymous comments. Just because somebody names themselves on a comments section doesn't mean they are risking more or have better things to say. Most of the time they just pimp their own blogs and youtube channels.

I have seen some of the worst comments by Anonymous comments, but I've also seen some of the best and most insightful too, some of them might not step forward and speak if they were to fear reprisals such as email harassment from the people who, though named, are trolls nonetheless.

Lee Kalba said...

So, Anon, it's not bullying when a group gangs up on one person and hurls insults? When people collectively intimidate and harass others, yes, that is bullying.
And yes, reading comments has become painful, of late.

Anonymous said...

I don't get why people don't just ignore the trolls. It's not hard. I ignore annoying people all the time in real life, and it's so much easier to do on the internet. They are just written words, people.

Anonymous said...

Bob, you may as well just disable anonymous posting right now. James is fucked in the head, he's never going to cease his harassment because he's not operating on anything resembling logic, and this obviously brings out the worst in other people. He's starting to attract the dark corners of the internet here. People have dropped dox on him, mentioned 4chan and ED, and advocated for his death. This site is going in the wrong direction if people are bringing stuff like this into it.

I know you're not one to completely give up on people, but James... give up on him. He isn't going to get any better no matter how many all-caps announcements you make. Even if he gets another rare moment of clarity and backs off, it will only last until the next political post and the cycle will continue unhindered. There's going to come that day when he finally does something awful enough to bring in the really dangerous people. While there's always the chance James the Blogspot account will come back, it's worth a shot. The money will find its way back to you.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. What did I miss? Last I heard there was a Paul who kept pointing out that Bob didnt do enough social justice in his commentary.. And now we're at THIS point?

- A very confused James. Not THAT James, of course, but still!

The Saarai'ari said...

Very well then. From here on, I'll do my best to ignore the trolls. I'll admit though, that last one Markus really got under my skin with his defending of Al-Qaeda. And it's easy enough to ignore James has he never brings anything new to the discussion table.

@anon 10:17

Aside from the heightened level of political topics of late which are always going to spawn a fight full of 4 letter insults, troll usually respond to being ignored by being bigger asses. If not here, we've probably all seen it elsewhere where someone with nothing to add still spams a comment section with variations of the same bile. Eventually we break, and unfortunately unlike in real life where we can give a physical lesson in how the first amendment isn't government sanction to run your mouth off without consequence, on the internet, the same words are the only weapons we have. Most people say ignore the troll, but it usually isn't a very fast solution, and I'm starting to suspect that many trolls know that being ignored doesn't mean they aren't getting a reaction at all, just that they have to push harder to get it to show.

You got it Bob. I may not be a regular commenter around these parts, but whenever I did comment it was usually a futile attempt to put James in his place. I apologize for contributing to the problem, even though I knew it was hopeless to even try and fix it. I truly do hope that James gets the help he needs, because living to cause conflict and be a constant irritant to people you disagree with is sad way to live ones life.

Anyhoo, do whatcha gotta do Bob. It's your blog and no one else can tell you what to do with it.

MrLSArcher said...

Errm, how is everyone able to identify James when he is posting as Anonymous? It seems a little crazy, TBH...

Anyway, personally, I have loved your stuff for ages, and how open you have your blog to your fans, letting them (mostly) say whatever they feel in the comments, as healthy, interesting debate, and it would be a,shame to lose some of that, by people who should not be allowed anywhere near decent society, let alone near a PC.

It's something I don't feel you get enough credit for...

Americans scare me with how crazy they get the moment you mention their politics. maybe move away from that and stick to the wider perspective geek shit.

also, fuck commenters stirring up bullshit.. yas need to calm down.

Anonymous said...

Oh shit. Bold letters AND and all caps title? This must be serious. Please don't take away the anon comments Bob. That would be such a travesty.

Just kidding. Less page hits for the liberal Glen Beck can never be a bad thing.

You are so easy to manipulate you have ceased to be fun anymore Bob, I almost posted a comment saying you don't have the balls to take away anon comments, therefore causing you to rage and ban anons. But that would have been no fun. I love to see you rage and drown in your own insecurities and go all fake tough guy on us. Again, nobody is intimidated by your bold text, and trolls like me feed on your tears and TL DR posts about how much you hate repubs. Its people like me that make the world interesting.

Just so you know, I get rock hard when you rage, and banning anon comments would give me the best orgasm trolling can buy.

Simon said...

I feel extremely bad for Bob considering the idiocy this comments section has turned into, a basic "my cock's bigger than you'rs" contest, that's all it is. I'm for banning comments altogether, they never contribute anything to a discussion and are a place for mentally disturbed indivudals who think they're cool when they're not at all.

Anonymous said...

Some of these commenters should seriously consider a new hobby :/

Anonymous said...

@ Simon

Comments can be insightful, rewarding, and worthwhile if moderators keep the tone civil. Bob can't really do that with his overbooked schedule and can't afford to hire somebody else to step in. Hence, this site.

Dear god.
I'm sorry, but the anonymous at 11:26 reminds me of the scene in Avengers where Loki is pitifully trying to freak out Black Widow.

Bob is handling the situation by taking note of how both sides should keep their shit in check.

He doesn't care if you cum when he decides to make a decision to maintain sanity on his blog, and if anyone has detected rage anywhere in this post, even in use of capslock to get the attention of people reading the blog and emphasis on an important point using bold letters, then you have misdetected in this instance. Rage is very specific and requires more parameters than just how you use your typeface.

I'm not trying to contribute to any sort of ganging up on anyone, I just wanted to address specific points brought up. If I've inadvertently contributed, I'm not gonna waa over being deleted.

The Saarai'ari said...

@Makus: See my response to you at the other topic about the drone strikes.

Anyways, I'm done trying to reason with you, and you'll be ignored further on. After this, I'm ignoring trolls, and hope they get themselves a better hobby or theirs to waste their time with.

Anonymous said...

Thought I would revisit to see how bad the situation was as I don't usually pay much attention to comments on the internet, anywhere

Yeah, seriously, good luck

Thank you Bob, I haven't been as active as of late on these comments -0 though I was always capricious if I'd say something or not in your comments to begin with the high level of high tempres and ridiculous trolling going on here ahs made it difficult to want to say anything here.

I do not agree with you politically, but I am golad that you are bringing this much needed hammer down, godspeed, sir.

...Talking politics in a hyper-polarized environment is going to cause this to happen, Bob... bu hey, you're a "team player" right?

http://moviebob.blogspot.com/2012/10/american-bob-message-to-young-liberals.html

Because that is all you showed here.. SUPPORT of that polarization and backing based on what team you are on instead of what the individual has done or is doing that the very "bullying" people on this forum are following.

You, sir... are part of the problem your forums are nothing more then a symptom of. Get rid of anonymous if you wish. It's your blog and you have a right to run it any way you desire. But you should be aware of this detail before you make that choice.

Nixou said...

"Because that is all you showed here.. SUPPORT of that polarization and backing based on what team you are on instead of what the individual has done"

Yeah, because it's soooo much better to play fake centrist and pretend that one's partisan politics are in fact the unbiased products of a perfectly impartial intellect.

Anonymous said...

Bob doesn't have the sack to get rid of anonymous comments. His e-fame is waning as it is and he wants to lap up every last drop he can.

Megabyte said...

@Nixou: Seriously? "Fake Centrist?" I have never hidden that I am conservative. But I won't look at someone with a D next to their name and assume "left-wing extremist who wants to ban the Church and not let people who earn death take their penalty while not even given unborn children the chance to live (aka abortion)" or something else equally stupid.

That's partisan sport-team voting... and that is exactly what Bob supported in that video from the left side of politics.

There is a big difference between partisan and personal biases... learn that fact before you try to talk down to me.

@Megabyte: So voting against a party is dumb "partisan sport-team voting", even if the voter can articulate how deeply uncomfortable with said party's platform and tendencies they are?

I really think you should post this on your Overthinker Blog. The comment section there can get REALLY nasty at times.

Anonymous said...

I know your ego demands that you read every comment on your blog, Bob - so read this one:

You are too much of a pretentious, prissy, hypocritical, spineless, money-grubbing, elitist, contrarian coward to ever get rid of Anonymous comments permanently. And to illustrate that.... well, you'll see. I'd hate to ruin the surprise. :)

Anonymous said...

@anonymous 8:31 am ,How is his e-fame waning?

Megabyte said...

@Cyrus: Yes... yes it is dumb to vote based on being uncomfortable with the party... and let me explain why.

If you go only by party platform, you do not know how much the individual you are actually voting against agrees or disagrees with a platform setup by the extreme of their party. (And this happens on both sides.)

If you look into it and see they are in lock step, then you are now voting against the individual's stances that just happens to be the same as the party platform. And at that point I say "kudos."

But if you are just assuming said lockstep because of the letter next to their name, or worse you ignore evidence that the points you are against they are as well for the sake of being against one party or another, you are simply not thinking. You are only justifying why you are against "the other team"

So yes, as I said at the beginning, that is very very very stupid. :)

Does this mean we can't make fun of Phil?

Because he sounds really fun to satirize/parody/generally make fun of.

Cyrus said...

@Megabyte: Oh, I know Americans have more of an "individual > party line" kind of mentality, but looking at recent voting records of congressional republicans, dissent from the herd doesn't really come into it all that much anymore.

One could blame this on the neocons, the Tea Party or even the mythical Empty Chair Obama, but I wouldn't fault voters for looking at this dynamic and simply opt out of the possibility that their vote might well strengthen an agenda that they do not support.

Now, I'm sure this happens for democrats too and it certainly doesn't help with the binary entrenchment America's politics have been suffering from. But as long as voting along the party line remains the norm, voters at the polls will observe and react to that, as they are entitled to.

Megabyte said...

@Cyrus: "Oh, I know Americans have more of an "individual > party line" kind of mentality, but looking at recent voting records of congressional republicans, dissent from the herd doesn't really come into it all that much anymore."

You contradict yourself and if you were right in the first part of this statement, we would probably be in a lot better place then this ultra-polarized political bullshit that happens now.

Cyrus said...

Well yeah, that contradiction was what I was trying to point out. Maybe "ideal" would have been more appropriate than "mentality", as obviously, the mentality seems to have changed.

Nixou said...

"Oh, I know Americans have more of an "individual > party line" kind of mentality"

No: they love to pretend to have more of a individual mentality. It's like the church, they like to pretend that they go to church more often than other western nations, which is bullshit.
And when it comes to voting patterns, a lot of americans love to pretend that they are independant highly-minded free-thinkers who don't give a shit about parties and spent a lot of time pondering about their political choices: they're not
And thankfully so, because the truth is, the only thing more stupid than pretending to be non-partisan is to actually be non-partisan: you really don't want to follow the party line? Well tough luck, because your elected officials will follow the party line. And thanks to Gerrymandering which killed for good blues dogs and moderate republicans, no one will challenge the party line.
I always clench my teeth when I hear someone saying "I'm not voting for the party, I'm voting for the person": at best you've been bribed, at worse you're a halfwit trying to convince people around you that your self-inflicted fealty is evidence of your intellectual superiority.

Anonymous said...

@Cyrus: So... if you are basically saying what I am... why are you arguing with me? I believe I told Bob to (and I quote) "Go fuck himself" over that video because he was actively encouraging this "my team vs your team" partisanship mentality that is rampant over the country.

And @Nixou: I seriously just want to call you an idiot too and be done with it.

1) They will likely tow the line to a point, but their record should speak to how much and where. Take 10 minutes out of your time to play Halo and check it out.

2) The only things dumber then thinking are not thinking and justifying others to not think too... this is what you do when you encourage people to just vote the party... dont think, just vote. Too many do this or gerrymandering would have 0 power.

and 3) How about someone who is trying to see more people be superior then encourage them to just knee-jerk inferiority? Have a problem with that? Because I have a problem with the reverse... hence why I told Bob to fuck himself over that video.

Cyrus said...

We probably all agree, that the extreme polarization has to stop.

I just don't think it is fair to call out voters (or commentators like Bob) for not doing "the right thing", when doing so is liable to make their lives a lot harder, e.g. voting for the republican who has no beef with gay marriage but given current trends would end up voting for an amendment to the constitution anyway.

It's the same dynamic with third party candidates: You could vote for, say, the Green Party, in order to push for some much needed diversification in the political landscape, but if that could mean that your kids won't have a healthcare plan a few months down the line, well, what are you going to do?

It sucks, but it's the little people in particular who are staring down a barrel here and end up perpetuating the status quo out of very elemental needs. What does a congressman lose, when he votes with his conscience rather than his party in mind?

Anonymous said...

So who was it again that was saying that Bob wouldn't actually go through with moderating comments because trolls control him?
